Final reflection

15/06/10

I have just completed the career development unit. From doing this unit it has changed my thoughts about what i might want to do in university and a career. At the start of this unit i thought i wanted to do business marketing at university, but now i have decided that i am not completely sure whether this would be for me, as whilst doing more research into what the marketing side of business actually does i am not sure i would like doing this, so as a result of this i have decided that i would like to do a BA (Hons) Business studies sandwich course, as i am not completely sure what kind of business i would like to go into, with this it will allow me to have more time to decide what part of business i like and think is relevant to what i would like to do as a career in the future.

As a career path i think at this moment in time i am still thinking about marketing but also advertising, the reason why i have choosen advertising aswell is because i have done a lot of research into this, and like the sounds of what it consists of.

i have enjoyed doing this unit as it has allowed me to spend a lot of time researching what i would like to do in the next 2-5 years, not only this but i have realised what my strengths and weaknesses are by doing a skills audit, and so far i think its looking quite good for my age, as it consists of a lot of strengths.

Hilary's talk on Law

17/05/10

Today Hilary came in and had a talk to us about jobs and careers in law. She was telling us about different routes we could take if we wanted to, to get into law. These routes are either university, or going into a solicitors office and working their till your about 25years old and then doing ILEX course to become either a solicitor and barrister.

She was telling us how the courses would work if we went down the university route, and the work load you have to put in if you want to become a solicitor or barrister.

I found this talk very interesting as it gave me an incite into what kind of jobs there were available in Law. Although I found this talk very interesting, I believe that this kind of career is not suitable to me as I do not find this interesting.

Martin's Finance and Accounting Presentation

26/04/10

Today Martin gave us a presentation on the educational steps that you need to take to become an accountant. Martin explained what you need to do in order to come an accomplished accountant. There are many educational steps that need to be taken and it can take up to 10 years acheive a Doctoral degree which is the highest degree needed to become an accountant. He told us that we would need to complete our current course which is a level three in education and then follow that by going to university and completing different degrees. He told us that it was hard work and if we were serious about doing it then we should go for it as it would be good for us in the future. If we sacrifice time now it would be good for us and help us in our future careers.

I appreiciated what Martin said and would consider taking these steps in education that he told us. I would prefer to take these steps in a subject like marketing but would not cancel out accounting, as I do like working out some of the numbers, and creating the graphs.

I think that doing all you can to get the career you want is essential and if you are serious and sure of your career path then there should be nothing stood in your way when you are trying to reach your goals. Seeing the handout given to us by Martin was useful because you can see the different levels of degree that need to be completed to be fully accomplished in what you want to do.

10/05/10

Today we watched a video about young people that are unemployed and are on benefits. The video followed four unemployed people that they had filmed back in 2007 and tried helping them getting work. This video showed them three years later, and there views on the recession and why they still haven't found work.

Out of the four people they followed two of them had found a job, the other two are still claiming benefits. These people were described as 'NEATS' this stood for non employment, education and training. Where they weren't working, wasn't in education or training.

The video then went on to discuss whether we should get rid of job seekers allowance and other benefits unless people are training or in a course or to community service to earn these benefits.

I believe that this should happen as people are getting to lazy to find work, as they are gettin £50 a week not to do anything.

Personality Tests

19/04/10

The first personality test we took was on www.thebuzbook.com here we had to answer a few questions to find out what kind of personailty traits we had. I answered these questions and found out that I was a lion - this means I enjoy being with my family and relatives. Also I share interest in socialising and having fun as a way to be close to my loved ones.It also says that im generally graceful and skilful in sport or leisure activities that interest me. My strengths are that im friendly, good at communicating, good at what is going on, can join in with people with enthusiasm, and can be generous and a popular team member.

With this first test I agree with most points of what I am like as a teenager and what my stengths are, and can see why my preferred roles are performer, carer, promoter. I don't know whether I would agree with this though.

The second test I took was another personality test but was more in-depth than the first. This test was on www.humanmetrics.com here we had to answer 72 questions which worked out what my type was. I came up as ESTP, which in more detail means I am spontaneous, and active. I also get great satisfaction from acting on my impulses. Also activities involving great power, speed, thrill and risk I enjoy. Persons of this type have a natural drive to best the competition. Also it says that this type of people admire and respect anyone who can beat them at their own game, this point I can almost definately agree with, as if I had an arguement with someone and they beat me, I would hold my hands up and see them winning and wouldnt hold a grudge. It says on my career indicator that I should go for management in business, sales/marketing specialist, entrepreneurship, stock broker, bodyguard, sport coaching, seafaring, and emergency medical services.

I agree with most points this test said about my personality, and can see my career indicator being right, as I know that I want to do something business related. Also I agree with the points that im active and get great satisfaction from the things stated above, and also that if i get beaten I admire and respect people for it.
